Log Base Seitz

And now a few snap shots from life at Log Base Seitz.

At Camp Victory there's a huge PX, a Wal-Mart like store where you can buy anything from TVs to shoes to toothpaste to food and magazines. And these lame shirts. ;)

Though the shot is blurry (and I thought I had trouble focusing), it does give a good sense of the dining facility where we all spend the majority of our time, and the group of New Mexicans with whom I spend much of my time. The guy in the green hat is the Commander of Log Base.

A view of beautiful Log Base Seitz with the town of Abu Ghraib in the distance (being patrolled by Blackhawks). The tiny logistical base at one point supplied 1/3 of Baghdad with anything from food and water to ammunition and fuel. The maintenance shop filled more than 10,000 orders in one year, including the uparmoring of more than 3,000 vehicles (to the tune of $25k a pop).

Just south of Abu Ghraib at sunset. Hopefully an indicator of things to come, the silver lining that is.

People from Abu Ghraib burn their garbage at night. We burn our garbage during the day, which makes the air over the base toxic, oh, pretty much round the clock.

And there are mortar attacks! This dud in the right hand corner flwe directly into the staff HQ cutting the communication wires seen to the left. Luckily it did not explode.

In one day we had four separate mortar attacks. This unexploded ordnance is waiting to be gathered. And how does one pick up UXO? "Very carefully," I was told by a wise man. "Like a little newborn baby."

Given the frequency of mortar attacks at Log Base Seitz, you learn quickly that bunkers like this one, which are sprinkled throughout the base, are your friend.

I started out taking daily walks when I arrived at base but given the air quality (see above) and frequency of mortar attacks (see above), I familiarized myself with the MWR, or recreation center. Given the amazing amount of food on this base, it's a place I should undoubtedly be spending more time. But why would I do that when there's...

Twister!

... or ladies' night at the med center. yes I was humiliated, but every journalist knows that sacrifices must be made in the pursuit of sources, and joining in was a condition for me to take photos.

Preparing for one of my rare and cherished trips off base, this time with the 245th.

At camp Taji, about 20 minutes to the north, there is what they call the bone yard, where Russian tanks from Saddam's army have been left to die.

There a very few Iraqis allowed on Log Base Seitz. The handful who have been hired for such jobs as cleaning, sweeping or filling sand bags are closely monitored.

I am here now and the fact that you tried to make LBS look nice is retarded. It sucks and the people need to see how we really live. Their should be no log base seitz, we still get mortared quite often and there are much better places we could be.

I remember that place too. I was like the 6th or 7th vehicle to pull in there in the middle of the night in 2003. RPG's and UXO all over the place. What a mess to clean up. Especially the warehouse full of parachutes. Thank GOD they didn't start mortaring us until July...

I was there as well, from December 05' to November 06'.It absolutly sucked. The first day on ground,if I'm not mistaken, there were at least four mortor attacks. As days went by,the mortars fell harder and harder, toward the end of the tour they slowed down, but about a month before they picked right back up! I dont even see the point in the post exsisting without infantry elements being there, but guess what, there was not an infantry element that stayed on that post,it was BS!!! My unit was a maintenance unit and we did more convoy security,QRF,and other infantry tactics then anything. We did do our mission to the fullest and then some.we were responsible for more crap than a little ass post like that should have been!!I will never forget that hell hole, but not from all bad stuff,I did learn a hell of alot over there including stuff that aint my MOS...Peace Out,More to come!!!

I was stationed in "Mortarville" (i.e. LBS) from May 2003 until Dec. 2003 with 151 Signal. Most of the command there were jerks and actually caused us to have more attacks by messing with the civilians. I definately do not miss being there and can't believe it is still open. At the looks of it not too much has changed except maybe less attacks. Most of the command actually hated us because we were national guard.

I WAS AT SEITZ FROM MARCH 05 TIL FEB 06, I THEN WENT TO MOSUL. YES WE GOT HIT, BUT THAT WAS WAR. QUIT THE CRYING AND FINGER POINTING, YOU ARE AND WERE SOLDIERS. MOSUL WAS MUCH WORSE. BUT MANY SOLDIERS WHO NEVER WENT OUTSIDE THE WIRE STAYED THEIR YEAR DRINKING AND DOING EVERYTHING THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO AND GOT BRONZE STARS FOR SUPPORTING THE TROOPS. DO YOU GUYS REALLY FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELVES?

Log Base Seitz was hell. I was there with th 245th Maint. Co from Feb 04 to Jan 05. As the pictures state, the air quality was terrible. We also had a warehouse burn containing pesticides and other chemicals. I came back with liver and thyroid issues. The Va is denying this. Has anyone else had any issue. e-mail me at joseph.clarkson@us.army.mil. Thanks for your time,Joe

Nice tattoo there. I think Iraqis that are to incompetent to aim mortars as it is (if they hit something its usually luck) aren't going to be helped much by photos, and I think its important for the American people to understand whats really going on in Iraq. Fuck officers who take the credit for the shit their soldiers did.

I looked up Log Base Seitz and Wikipedia has a blurb under Camp Victory. I spent a lot of time at Seitz as it was my Battalion's SSA a few years back. Fortunately, Wikipedia informs me that Seitz no longer exists and is now a part of Victory. Hopefully, they were smart and moved Seitz instead of just renaming it. A horrible place. Funny because I stayed in Victory just over a mile away and we never had the indirect fire that they did. I felt really bad for the guys that had to work and live in Seitz.

I must agree that the tactically revealing photos are an affront to the memory of Log Base Seitz's namesake.

The first State Department officer to be killed in Iraq, Edward Seitz was killed by a mortar round through the un-armored roof of his quarters.

i was there in 04 also, the battalion only cared bout themselves, hell they rarely went on the road but they got bronze stars and all we got was arcomms. that place was a shithole. and the leadership sucked on that fob. we all know who deserves the bronze stars on that camp everyone but the new mexico national guard 515th csb.

I was there 05/06 and it was still crap. The wire wasn't secure at the back of the post by tower nine. It's the one in the corner at the back of the base straight back from the gate that connects it to Liberty. Dogs would come through the gates all of time. We were less than 100 meters from the houses there. I could see into them when they opened the doors. I had fun times there but...

This disgrace is still open? I was there from 03-04 and yes the leadership sucked ass. To make a point, the place was ran like a prison camp and almost every day there were some sort of mortar attack. I remember the Battalion XO picking UXO and telling soldiers "It's just a dud". Furthermore, the same idiot told the combat arms to keep their help to themselves in the Stars and Stripes magazine. Yes, the dream, there was plenty of bogus bronze stars given out, including one dud of a First Sergeant that left her unit for Sergeant Major school and told her company "I don't care about you guys, I got mine" while holding hers orders up showing her going home. Lots of good and bad times and some great soldiers, but I will never forget the pathetic higher lack of leadership and cannot understand why this place is still open. As other have stated, these photos should be taken down to protect the future soldiers.

God Bless our Troops!

I remember driving to that place and asking myself why are we passing that check point, and why are they pointed the way we are going. It started march 03-April 04, I was with 542ND Maint Co. was the F&E NCOIC. Nothing but mortar attacks and that call to prayer well I still hate it remember the time we got hit, hit in 04 we had over 6-10 black hawks flying in to carry out the wounded and dead. It was a bad night we lost our only soldier that night as much as we got hit that wasn't bad , but to lose just one is too many . I had lots of crappy times there but we made the best of it, it made us real soldiers.
I hope everyone reads this posting from SFC Getty in Afghan.

I was a civil. there. The problem was that all the officers wanted to be big heroes and win medals so they can be the big man on the block when they got home. Well all you officers did was get people dead. Before you start I was in the Marines for 4 years and the Army for 6 years and was in Beruit and the first Gulf war. Who ever that one capt was that carried the big med kit on his back was the biggest turd I have ever met in my life. If the officers, every damn one of you, put as much time in taking care of your troops as you did trying to get medals, you would have had a great unit. But instead you had a band of misfits pulling in all directions but together. And you senior NCOs let them get away with it, you ball-less wonders.
